How to use skincare products correctly

Header The Moisturizer - How to use cosmetics products correctly
Do you know how to use your skincare products correctly? Cosmetics may seem simple, but you must use your beauty products right to avoid unbalancing your skin. Did you know it’s very common to make mistakes when washing your face or using sunscreen? Let me show you how to use all your skincare correctly!

Hello hello! How are you? Today I bring you a post that I think can be very useful. Many of you have asked me on different occasions about how the different products of the beauty routine should be applied. It is true that it is something that for some may seem very elementary, but there are those who prefer not to even use a product because of ignorance about how it should be used. Of course, among different products may have small nuances, but with this post I want to provide you with a small guide to know the correct way to use all the products you have at home and thus get the best possible performance out of them.

Those of you who read me often will remember that not long ago I shared a post related to this topic and that it is worth going back to take a look from time to time: here you can read a little more about the importance of having a good beauty routine.

In this post I will discuss the following topics:

1. Preparation necessary for your skincare routine.

2. Where should you do your skincare routine?

3. How to correctly use the different skincare products.

.

1. PREPARATION NECESSARY FOR YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE.

Your beauty routine has to be a ritual. Those 5 or 10 minutes are made for you to enjoy and for you to focus on yourself. At the end of the day is a time that you dedicate to take care of yourself and feel better, so it is important that you are focused on what you do and that you can enjoy in conditions. With this I do not mean that it has to be a Zen moment of total concentration in your beauty so that your skin absorbs nutrients better, but the main idea is to be able to have a little time for you.

There are some preliminary aspects to start your morning or night beauty routine that you may miss but that will help you to get a more effective result. You may think they are obvious, but it never hurts to remember them.

Always, always, you should always wash your hands before starting your beauty routine. Since you are going to be manipulating different products and you are going to be applying them directly on the face with your hands, these must be clean to avoid getting the opposite effect to the desired, spreading bacteria. Even if you do not realize, all day long you come into contact with hundreds of things that are probably not especially clean: doors, pens, telephones, chairs, switches, clothes, computers, and so on, an endless list. When you come into contact with them, your hands retain part of the microorganisms and transport them to new places. Of course, you want to prevent the new site to which you transport those bacteria from being your face. Thus, with a very simple gesture you can get a better result in the care of your skin.

If you have long hair surely you already know what I am going to talk about: it is important to remove the hair from the face (even when it is short). I’ve noticed that when I do not, my skin tends to get oilier than usual. If you pick up your hair (with a headband, for example) you can avoid getting its oil deposited on the face and, in addition, you will also make it stay cleaner by not coming into contact with the different products of your beauty routine.

Finally, even if it’s something that can go unnoticed, you should frequently change the towel you use to dry your face (that’s in case you dry your face with one, I prefer not to do it). I’m assuming you use a specific towel for this (and if not, you should start today). In the towel there will always be remains of products and moisture will favor the proliferation of microorganisms, so changing it daily (or every two days) will keep the bacteria at bay so that they do not destabilize the pH of your skin or cause any kind of irritation or adverse reaction.

2. WHERE YOU SHOULD DO YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE.

As I said before, it is important that your beauty routine is a time that you can dedicate yourself 100%, you do not deserve less. The place where you do the routine is essential, since you must be comfortable and calm, without being disturbed, in order to really focus on what you are doing.

One fairly obvious aspect is that you must carry out the routine in a well-lit place and where you can have easy access to all the products you are going to use. In addition, you will need to be able to wash your face comfortably, so doing it in front of the bathroom mirror is the best solution.

There is something that is quite a comfortable solution but isn’t the best for your skin: washing your face in the shower. I understand that it allows you to rinse your face a lot better after using the cleanser, but it can be negative since it is very easy for the hair oils to deposit on the skin and because if you shower with excessively hot water (something you should avoid in any case, as it ends up damaging the skin) you can get a counterproductive result.

In any case, the most important thing is that you are comfortable in the place where you do your beauty routine to truly enjoy it.

3. HOW TO USE THE DIFFERENT SKINCARE PRODUCTS CORRECTLY.

After the first introductory points we will go to see in depth how you should apply each of the products of your beauty routine. Naturally, each product is different and has its particularities, but I hope that after reading this post you have clear how to apply them to get the most out of your routines.

This graphic aims to help you understand in which part of your skincare routine you should use each product.
You don’t need to do all the steps from this routine (but you should always cleanse, moisturize and use sunscreen).
Remember it’s key to do a patch test every time you consider adding new products to your skincare routine.

  • Cleanser.

On your morning routines you can just do a simple cleanse. In this post I told you a little about double cleansing and its effectiveness when it comes to getting rid of the particles that are deposited on the skin. For those who do not remember, double cleansing consists of first applying a product with an oily base (oil, milk or butter) and then another water-based product (gel or soap). With this you get to remove everything that is deposited on the skin effectively without altering its balance, isn’t it great? So, with the first cleanse you remove all the oil-soluble products (such as sunscreen or makeup) and with the second cleanse you remove the remains of the first product, as well as the water-soluble products (such as sweat).

If you choose to start using a double cleansing (which I recommend), you should know that your two steps are carried out differently:

For the first cleanse (which you will do with a butter, milk or oil), you just have to take with your hands the necessary amount of product (do not use much, I know you) and spread it all over the face with the fingertips, massaging it. Next, you will remove all the product with warm water. For me as the first cleaner I love the Klairs Gentle Black Deep Cleansing Oil, which you can get on Wishtrend and on Yesstyle.

To do the second cleanse you will have to apply a little more warm water on the face, since it requires it to be well moistened. Next, take the necessary amount of soap or gel in your hands (I recommend you try to decrease the amount progressively until you find the one you really need) and massaging the whole face with your fingertips so that it extends well. Once you have finished you only have to remove all the product with lukewarm water and you will be finished. At this point you should remove the excess water. I prefer to do it with just their hands to keep the skin moist during the rest of the routine. In any case, it is not necessary to dry the skin in depth and, if you decide to dry with a towel, you should do it with gentle strokes, not dragging it through the skin (since that is much more aggressive). If you are looking for a good cleansing gel I would recommend you to try the COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser, which you can get on Wishtrend, on Yesstyle, on FeelUnique and on Jolse.

  • Toner.

As you will remember from previous posts, the toner is the first product of our beauty routine that we let our skin absorb, so it is essential. With it you manage to remove the possible excess of cleanser that have remained on the skin and, in addition, keep the pH of the skin well balanced. If you are looking for a good toner you can try the Pyunkang Yul Essence Toner, which you can get on Jolse and on Yesstyle and which is very moisturizing and nourishing and the Pixi Glow Tonic, which is also exfoliant for its composition rich in glycolic acid.

In many products you will find indications that it is better to apply the toner with a cotton pad, but I have not used it for a long time and I am delighted with the results. When applying the toner with a cotton pad, it absorbs the toner but does not extend the product over the skin; however, when applying the toner directly with the hands, the skin absorbs it correctly and we are not dragging a cotton all over the face. My advice is that you should at least give a chance to the trick, you have nothing to lose. So, I apply the toner by taking a small amount in the palm of my hand and gently extending it while I massage the face. At the end I try to give soft (SOFT) taps for better absorption.

  • Serum.

Serums or boosters are concentrates of one or more ingredients that help us cope with particular skin concerns, such as spots, wrinkles, acne, etc. As a general rule, three or four drops of product are usually more than enough, but there are always exceptions.

It is usual for brands to indicate in the packages of the serums that they have to be applied directly on the face, although I find that in most cases it is very complicated and it’s not the most hygienic solution (since it’s very easy to contaminate the product by accidentally touching the dropper). If you have enough skill, I recommend you do it this way to get the most out of the product, but if you are clumsy like me, you can apply the amount you need in the palm of your hand and extend it very well all over the face helping with the tips of your fingers. Serums are usually very light, so they are usually absorbed quickly. As a serum I love The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5, which you can get on DECIEM, on SkinStore and on FeelUnique; it really helps you keep your skin well hydrated and nourished. Also, The Ordinary Vitamin C Suspension 23% + HA Spheres 2%, available on DECIEM (recommended), on SkinStore and on FeelUnique is a nice solution to help you rebalance your skin tone.

  • Mask.

Masks help us to take better care of our skin by helping it to stay cleaner or nourished (depending on each specific product). We can differentiate between two basic types of masks: the sheet masks (one-use paper masks, currently very popular with the rise of Korean cosmetics) and wash-off masks (which must be rinsed after using them).

The application of the sheet masks is simple, you just have to place them well on the skin, making sure they cover all the possible surface (so that their active ingredients can be absorbed well) and let them rest for as long as the container indicates. I have stopped using sheet masks, since their existence as single-use products make them a terribly unsustainable idea.

To apply wash-off masks, such as clay ones, we must take the necessary amount so that there is an uniform layer on our skin (without being too thick, so as not to waste product). The ideal is to use a silicone spatula (some brands already sell them) or a plastic one, because that way you will not have to put your fingers and the whole process is much cleaner and more hygienic. Next you will have to let the mask rest for as long as the manufacturer says and, finally, rinse it with plenty of lukewarm water. As of these masks I never tire of recommending the I’m From Honey Mask, which you can find on Wishtrend and on Yesstyle, it leaves your skin super smooth.

I want to mention a special type of masks that are very fashionable lately, the sleep masks. The main idea is to apply them at the end of your PM beauty routine (after the moisturizer) and let them rest on the skin throughout the night, while you sleep. In this way, the skin absorbs its nutrients little by little and in the morning you only have to remove the excess product by washing your face normally. If you want to try a great night mask you should try the Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin E Mask, which you can find on Wishtrend and on Yesstyle.

  • Moisturizer.

We all know how we should apply the moisturizer (or so we think). Just in case, it is convenient to remember the most basic things from time to time. It is usually enough for me to take the amount equivalent to a pea (I like to apply it directly with the tips of my fingers, massaging the face well and gently pressing it for a better absorption). For creams with a screw cap you can also use a small plastic or silicone spatula like the ones mentioned above to use them in a more hygienic way. Then you just have to let the cream absorb, I like to give it a couple of minutes to make sure it penetrates well into the skin.

  • Eye contour.

Some eye contours (like this one from The Ordinary) are applied with dropper to facilitate taking the right amount of product. In general, with a droplet of product under each eye you will have more than enough.

In any case, to apply the eye contour we must focus on the bone under the lower eyelid. We have to extend the product with the fingertips from the inside to the outside of the area giving soft tapping to ensure that it penetrates well (and thus reduce dark circles and bags, significantly improving our appearance). My favorite eye contour right now is The Ordinary Caffeine Solution 5% + ECGC, available on DECIEM (recommended), on SkinStore and on FeelUnique.

  • Sunscreen.

I want to take this opportunity to remind you that using sunscreen every day is essential. And yes, you have to use it even if your makeup or moisturizer says it contains SPF. It is the most important part of your beauty routine, so do not stop using it for a single day (even if it is cloudy more than London in November). Sunscreen is the last step of all your morning routines, always. Never forget it. To apply it, you need a generous amount (a good tip is to apply a line of product over two of your fingers and then extend that). Once you have extended it you will have finished your routine and you will be ready to leave. Easy, right? In case you want to know how to choose the right one for you, you can check this post. Also, I have a very thorough comparison of sunscreens so that you can find the best one for your skin.
